OBJECTION FROM Maiseyrose (SE9 6RL)

STC SPORTS CLUB, ELTHAM  - SIGMA STRATEGIC
  1. I am writing to formally object to the proposed closure of the STC sports grounds on the following grounds:

    1.

    Loss of Essential Community Asset

The STC sports grounds serve as a vital hub for the local community, offering space for physical activity, youth engagement, mental health support, and social cohesion. Shutting it down would disproportionately affect young people, community sports clubs, schools, and residents who rely on this space for recreation and well-being.

    2.

    Violation of Public Access Rights

If the land has been historically accessible to the public, and particularly if it is classified as public land or common land, then its closure could violate established rights of access under the Commons Act 2006 or relevant local bylaws. Any decision to close such grounds would require full public consultation and legal justification.

    3.

    Failure to Follow Due Process

If the council has not conducted a statutory consultation with residents and stakeholders or has failed to carry out a proper equality impact assessment, the closure could be challenged legally as a breach of administrative duty. Local authorities are bound by the Local Government Act 1972 to act in the best interests of their constituents, and a failure to engage meaningfully with the public undermines this duty.

    4.

Conflict with Public Health and Sports Policy

The closure contradicts both national and local policies promoting health, fitness, and youth development. The Government’s Sporting Future strategy and Sport England’s objectives prioritize access to quality facilities. Shutting down a well-used sports ground is counterproductive to these goals and could jeopardize funding or support from governing bodies.

    5.

    Negative Economic and Social Impact

Beyond sports, the STC grounds contribute to the local economy (via events, vendors, and clubs) and prevent antisocial behavior by keeping youth positively engaged. Removing this facility could lead to increased social issues and long-term costs to the community.

We urge the council to reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions, such as community asset transfer, funding applications, or partnerships with local sports organizations.

    Yours faithfully,

maiseyrose
